Transforming Perspectives |  A misconception of Christian faith, is related to the ideology of abundance often interpreted as prosperity. Contrarily, historical narratives of Scripture, frame the concept of God’s provisions by events comparable to planting, gathering and receiving, relative to the perspective of farming. Jesus began to teach to the multitude following, “Then he told them many things in parables, A farmer went out to sow his seed.” Matthew 13:3, New International Version

Contextually, in the era of the Old Testament, a typical livelihood was of farming consisting of seasons of planting and cultivating and harvesting.  Biblically, farming was conveyed as a metaphorical comparisons for abounding in life. The most important aspect of a believer’s life is display in the acts of planting. Gaining patience, allowing time for seeds to grow by nutrients provided from God, and supplied by cultivated soil, sun and rain.  Moreover, hope in times of waiting for harvesting.

Significant, however is the existential root of abundance, being centered in the overflowing provisions of God, given by faith in acts of giving, exemplified in a widow’s offering “And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.
And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.” Mark 12:41-43, King James Version

Symbolically, abounding is the simplicity of God’s providence, also purposed  to illuminate man’s interdependence for fellowman, being fundamental to the functioning of faith in Jesus Christ by having effectual lives, trusting in God. “And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.”  Mark 12:41-43, King James Version
